If you have a growing love for wine and your collection is expanding faster than it’s being consumed then you’re probably starting to explore how to properly store your wine and maximise its potential. Both red and white wine can benefit from ageing a little but it’s really your red wines that you want to look after because if they are correctly stored in the right conditions, the wine stays fresher longer and even improves over a period of time.
How Long Does Wine Last?
Red wine tends to be better for aging due to their higher level of tannins. There are many white wines which improve with a little bit of age but most white wine is best consumed in the first 1-3 years of the vintage. Most of your red wines on the shelf today are made to be consumed right away or within the next 1-3 years but there are your more premium reds which can be cellared away for decades under the right conditions!
Temperature
In South Africa, our average temperatures are a lot higher than say in Europe so we do need to be mindful of where and how we’re storing our wine at home. The optimal temperature range for wine storage is 12-16 degrees celcius so a nice dark corner or a cool area of the house is your best bet. Avoid any direct sunlight of course and any other heat sources such as an oven or fireplace for example.
Other Avoidances
Light and vibration. As mentioned, it’s best practice to keep wine away from any direct sunlight or warm rooms with lots of light. Vibration is another factor to keep in mind as believe it or not, constant vibration from bouncy floors, cars in a garage or washing machines alongside your cases of wine can all impact optimal wine storage.
Position
Have you ever wondered why wine bottles are stored on the sides? Well it’s because when you keep the cork wet you prevent it from drying up and exposing your wine to air which will lead to it spoiling. This is where wine racks and wine storage crates come into play.
